China News Service: Model Workers Deliver “First Class of the Semester” — Wang Bing on “Earning World Respect for Chinese Bearings”

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 24 (China News Service) — The 2026 university session of “Passing the Torch, Building the Future,” an event where model workers and master craftsmen deliver the “first class of the semester,” was recently held at Guangdong University of Technology. Five model workers took the stage to share their stories of dedication with more than 500 students.

Pan Guixin, recipient of the National May 1st Labor Medal and chief innovation officer of China Unicom Guangdong, spoke on “rooting down, growing up, and innovating through integration.” His team jointly developed a 5G-A native private network with Gree Electric, built a 5G-A smart “lights-out factory” in Zhuhai where AI-powered quality inspection raises the pass rate to 99.99%, and completed China’s first provincial-level 5G ocean network with continuous coverage reaching 61.5 km offshore.

Wang Bing, National Model Worker and technical expert in the national key program on “fundamental manufacturing technologies and key components,” told the story of “earning world respect for Chinese bearings.” In 2003, to solve a bearing problem for a renowned European elevator company, she and her team rebuilt equipment, developed instruments, and built test rigs — turning “a lump of iron that did not look like a bearing” into a product meeting industry technical standards.

Liu Xinghan, Guangdong Provincial Model Worker at Datang Shantou New Energy, shared his story in offshore wind power. Facing changeable sea conditions and a construction window of only 21 days, his team completed the installation of 18 wind turbines, setting a record of 48 hours for a single unit. The wind farm has since become Guangdong’s only offshore wind farm certified “5A” for two consecutive years, with turbine availability above 99% for three straight years.

Wang Qinjin, National Model Worker and chief pilot at SF Airlines, recounted his journey from warehouse clerk to captain. He has now flown safely for over 6,600 hours, carrying nearly 40,000 tonnes of cargo. “A dream may arrive late, but with enough effort and persistence, it never fails to show up,” he said.

Huang Dan, recipient of the National May 1st Labor Medal, shared his journey from security guard to the national podium. Over two decades he has persisted in charity work for education, helping more than 1,500 students in need stay in school. “University is a new starting line; kindness is the foundation, and focus, diligence and excellence are the best path of growth,” he told the students.
